About La Tonya
“I still remember the day I realized that helping women believe in and enhance their natural beauty is my purpose in life.”
Growing up in a family of designers, I developed an early affinity for fashion, modeling, and make-up artistry. But like so many others, I put my dreams on hold to pursue more “realistic” goals. After high school, I obtained a degree in mathematics from Tennessee State University, then went on to work for over a decade in the IT field.
Though I initially chose a different career path, I always did my best to stay connected to my passions by taking part-time jobs with companies such as the John Casablanca Modeling and Career Center, where I taught make-up application, fashion styling, and runway techniques. I also served as co-owner of the Chymes School of Dance, where I developed a curriculum for modeling and etiquette classes for young girls. And, in 2000, I created my own line of fashion, pitch black gear. Because of my fashion and modeling experience, I also had the opportunity to coordinate, cast, and manage all fashion shows for pitch black gear, inc., as well as shows for numerous other designers/retailers, including David’s Bridal, Percy ly’s, and Davis’ Consultant and Fashion.
Not everyone has a passion so strong that they are willing to step out on faith to pursue it. And, I must admit that it took me over a decade to do so. But, in 2007, I could no longer deny my purpose. After much contemplation, I left a successful career in IT and moved back to Chicago, where I enrolled in the fashion program at the International Academy of Design Technology. Fashion school was everything I dreamed of and more. Not only did I perfect my craft, but I was fortunate enough to earn numerous recognitions for my designs. While at IADT, I also obtained a Make-up certification from Make-up First. Finally, in 2009, I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
